Caucusing & leadership selection

Caucusing & leadership selection

Mr. Cunningham,

I largely agree with your platform - at least enough to vote for you in a year when the GOP has no chance whatsoever of regaining control of the House - but I put to you the same question I have put to other libertarian-leaning Republican legislative candidates in recent elections: Would you agree, if elected, to NOT vote for any Republican speaker candidate in January who does not share your enthusiasm for the constitutional issues listed in your position statements?

Whatever their professed positions, I find it difficult to vote for any candidate who would caucus with a party that, of late, makes me fear for the future of civilization itself. As you know, the Speaker wields a disproportionate amount of power in the House, and the question of who occupies that position is far, far more relevant to the legislative and oversight activities of Congress than who happens to represent some obscure district in Massachusetts. Again, I don't see the GOP having any chance of retaking the House this year so it is largely a moot point, but I would feel more comfortable voting for you if I had some assurance that you would do nothing to further enable the present deranged agenda of the Republican Party. I respect and appreciate the fact that your positions are consistent with the Republican Party of yore, but as the last 8 years have demonstrated quite clearly, that Republican Party no longer seems to exist at all.
